AN INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP OF THE DIVERCITY PROJECT DEDICATED TO THE FIGHT AGAINST DISCRIMINATION WAS HELD IN ALBANIA

In Pogradec, Albania, on September 1 and 2, 2026, an international workshop “Local Solutions for Tackling Discrimination” was held, within the fourth work package (WP4) of the DiverCity project – Local Voices for Inclusive Communities: Strengthening Diversity and Combating Discrimination in Southeastern Europe.

The event was organized by the Albanian partner Economic Intelligence Center (EIC), with the participation of representatives of partner organizations from seven countries: Greece, Slovenia, Italy, Albania, Romania, Cyprus and Serbia. Association Dunav 1245, a project partner from Serbia, was represented by Neda Brajenović, Sonja Vrbaški, Branko Dimitrijević and Damir Brajenović.

The two-day gathering was dedicated to finding practical solutions for preventing discrimination, strengthening social inclusion and improving cooperation between local governments, civil society organizations and citizens. Special attention is paid to the challenges faced by members of minority and other sensitive social groups, as well as the opportunities to contribute to the creation of more equal and open communities through joint local initiatives.

The program included the presentation of the goals of the DiverCity project, an address by the representative of the Pogradec local government, presentations on available projects and services, as well as activities related to the work of institutions responsible for protection against discrimination. Through discussions, exchange of experiences and presentation of personal stories, the participants had the opportunity to see different forms of discrimination and discuss possible responses of local communities to these challenges.

The special importance of the workshop was reflected in connecting experiences from different European environments and considering the ways in which the European principles of equality, tolerance and respect for diversity can be applied in the everyday life of citizens. The talks were aimed at improving local policies, strengthening cooperation between institutions and the civil sector, and encouraging the active participation of citizens in solving social problems.

As part of the program, a visit to the village of Lin, on the shore of Lake Ohrid, was organized, during which the participants had the opportunity to learn about the cultural and historical heritage of this part of Albania.

The participation of the Dunav 1245 association represents the continuation of its involvement in international initiatives that promote civic participation, intercultural dialogue, equality and the development of inclusive local communities.

The DiverCity project brings together seven partner organizations with the aim of contributing to the reduction of discrimination and social exclusion, the empowerment of citizens and the improvement of the capacity of local self-governments to implement inclusive policies. Through international workshops, seminars, campaigns and other participatory activities, the project encourages the exchange of good practices and the development of concrete solutions adapted to the needs of local communities.

The DiverCity project (No. 101249823) is co-financed by the European Union through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) program, within the Networks of Towns call.
